[6평] 2022년 6평 29번 어법

*수능과 6월, 9월 평가원 모의고사는 그 다음해 학년으로 출제년도가 매겨집니다. 가령 2021년 6월에 치른 모의고사는 '2022학년도 대학수학능력시험 6월 모의평가'가 정식 명칭이 됩니다. 

 

29. 다음 글의 밑줄 친 부분 중, 어법상 틀린 것은?

Most historians of science point to the need for a reliable calendar to regulate agricultural activity as the motivation for learning about what we now call astronomy, the study of stars and planets. Early astronomy provided information about when to plant crops and gave humans ① their first formal method of recording the passage of time. Stonehenge, the 4,000-year-old ring of stones in southern Britain, ② is perhaps the best-known monument to the discovery of regularity and predictability in the world we inhabit. The great markers of Stonehenge point to the spots on the horizon ③ where the sun rises at the solstices and equinoxes ― the dates we still use to mark the beginnings of the seasons. The stones may even have ④ been used to predict eclipses. The existence of Stonehenge, built by people without writing, bears silent testimony both to the regularity of nature and to the ability of the human mind to see behind immediate appearances and ⑤ discovers deeper meanings in events.

이 문제는 먼저 답을 보겠습니다. 답은 5번이 되는데요, 동사에 밑줄이 그어져 있으면 항상 제일 먼저 생각해야 하는 것이 수일치입니다. 수일치는 동사와 주어의 수일치이니까 당연히 그 동사에 걸리는 주어가 뭔지만 찾으면 되겠죠. 이 문장에서 주어가 될 수 있는 것은 The existence of Stonehenge 하나 뿐인데 단수니까 discovers하면 맞는 것처럼 보입니다. 그런데 의미가 좀 어색하죠. '스톤헨지의 존재는 사건들에 있는 깊은 의미를 발견해낸다'고 하면 의미가 이상해요. 그러면 discover가 걸리는 게 문장의 주어가 아닌 다른 것일 가능성이 있다는 뜻인데요, 전체적으로 해석을 해보면 이 discover는 그 앞의 the ability of the human mind to see... and to discover... 이런 식의 병렬구조로 보는 것이 타당하죠. the ability를 꾸며주는 형용사적 용법으로 쓰인 to discover라는 얘기입니다. '즉각적인 출현 ('일시적인 현상'도 좋겠네요. 그때 그때 일시적으로 보이는 천체 현상들을 관측하는 데 그치는 게 아니라) 그 너머를 보는 인간 정신의 능력, 그리고 여러 사건들에서 보다 깊은 의미를 발견해내는 인간 정신의 능력' 이렇게 되는 구조입니다. 어법 문제는 보시다시피 어법 하나만 놓고 보는 게 아니라 문장의 해석을 밑바탕에 깔고서 풀어야 합니다. 

 

2, 3, 4번은 특별할 게 없고요 (질문 있으시면 댓글로), 좀 문제가 되는 게 1번의 their입니다. 이 their는 5번이 강력한 답이 되기 때문에 그냥 humans'로 보고 지나가게 되는 것인데 개인적인 의견입니다만 its가 더 맞아 보입니다. 그러니까 early astronomy's로 본다는 것이죠. 근거를 들어 설명하기는 힘든데, 편하게 얘기하자면, 그게 주로 영어가 쓰이는 방식이기 때문입니다. their가 100% 맞다면, 만약 저 선지가 its로 나왔을 때 그때는 그걸 답으로 했을까요? 5번이 확정적으로 답이 되기 때문에 1번은 그냥 지나갔을 뿐이지 its로 나왔다면 또 그에 맞게 해석하고 지나갔을 겁니다. 그렇지 않나요? 

 

어쨌든 어법 문제도 해석이 먼저다, 이 원칙 꼭 기억하시기 바랍니다.
